Dear Friends,
Last fall we visited my son-in-law’s parents in San Diego, CA. They are wonderful people and they treated us to an afternoon of sailing around San Diego Bay. These were impressive waters; the bay is a major US naval hub. In fact, 5 of our 11 aircraft carriers were in dock at the time we sailed. 5 aircraft carriers are greater than what China and Russia have combined!
Anyway, the captain of the boat, Captain Richie, let me pull up the large sail on the mast. While I did so, he told me that he can’t stand motorboats. I asked him why, and he replied, “To them it is all about the destination; to sailors it is all about the journey.”
Oh, that is RICH, Richie! It really is. It can be exhausting when life keeps throwing punches at you. It is easy to stop and complain about how nothing seems to go your way. But when you look at those punches as opportunities to gain strength and resilience, you’ll find that you start to cherish the journey and realize that being in a “perfect” state is for the afterlife.
Continuous improvement and enjoying the path to “perfect” (whatever that means) is what we are here for. Sailing is a great metaphor because, in a way, the winds- which you have no control over- dictate where you are going. How you respond to those winds- with the sails you use and the direction you choose to tack-will determine whether you run ashore or stay afloat.
Life is going to happen! Don’t blame the winds of change – ride them so that you are not fighting this force of nature. I have found that out from 40 years of biking…I am a lot faster with the wind!
Below are some of our new exercise videos that will help you learn how to be flexible while riding the waves of life!
God Bless,
Dr. Dan
