- Wake Up Dead
Dear Friends,
I was having a conversation with a patient about living in the present moment when she said, “Yep, you never know when you’re going to wake up in the morning and be dead!”
My head tilted to the side, much like my dog Remi when I speak to him, as if to say, “HUH?”
Yeah – I don’t know that waking up dead is possible. Actually, I do know this guy who died and woke up 3 days later. That turned out to be a pretty big deal.😃
I get what this patient was trying to say, though. She meant that you never know when your time is up – which is both a blessing and a curse.
A dear friend of our family found out that her boyfriend has a very aggressive form of brain cancer. No moping around – they have been cramming life in like you can’t believe. I am so inspired by it. But watching their experience makes me think: we should try not to worry about the next moment so much that we miss the moment at hand.
Sometimes we live in the past. Sometimes we worry about the future. Get stuck in either place, and you miss the present, which is the only moment that is guaranteed.
My father once bought me a book called The Precious Present when I was going through a time worrying about my collegiate future. Moral of the book was that the most precious present we have is the PRESENT MOMENT.
The present is also the best environment for your body to exist in. Bringing your mind to the present sets you up physically for better hormonal function, digestion, stress management, sleep… you get the gist. Your mental state affects your physical state, which affects your spiritual state. They are 3 in 1. Wow, that guy who woke up 3 days after he died was 1 part of 3 as well. Seems to be a repeating theme. 😄 Such is the circle of life.
Live in the moment. It is a gift. Just say thanks and enjoy it!
God Bless,
Dr. Dan
