Dear Friends,
My sister Nicki and I are Irish twins. She is 11 months older, while I am more athletic, smarter, and better looking. Oh, sibling rivalries, they never end. Actually, we look very similar. I describe myself as her with different reproductive hardware; she describes herself as me in drag. 😊
She lives part of the year in Martha’s Vineyard. One day, she was bopping down Middle Road with the rapper Fifty Cent blaring on her stereo when she got pulled over for speeding. As the officer approached the car, she rolled down the window. The officer said “Ma’am you were speeding.” My sister flicked her head towards the blaring radio and blurted out “Fi’ty made me do it.”
The police officer buckled over laughing, stood up, and said “Slow down.” That got her out of a ticket, but is also a great example of how to live. When you take life too seriously, it becomes a struggle. Life has a lot of ups and downs. The downs become more shallow when laughter and humor are a part of your life.
It has been said that laughter is the best medicine. I agree. It creates a surge of healing energy and hormones into your body. People that can laugh at themselves, especially in misfortune, heal better!
Everyone is so touchy today. It is what I call the “Gotcha Society.” People are looking to be offended. Don’t let yourself get that way. You need to let things roll off your back. When you take offense, you are breathing life into that which offends you. Instead, smother it out by not offering it attention. This is not to say you don’t address it. Rather, overwhelm any offense with positivity and humor.
So in case something bad happens, be sure to keep 2 quarters in your car. 50 cents can buy you out of quite a jam!
God Bless,
Dr. Dan
