“Habits are, simply, reliable solutions to recurring problems in our environment.” – Jason Hreha
Dear Friends,
I saw the above quote the other day and thought it embodied the process of transitioning to better habit choices perfectly. Say, what?! Habits are choices?! Hell yeah, they are. But our mentality has shifted to one of victimhood.
What is a victim mentality? It is eliminating responsibility for your state of being; it is acting as a passive bystander in your own life. In finances, we may claim, “He got ahead because he was unethical.” In love, “He or she got all the looks.” In health, “I have bad genetics.” In athletics, “She was just born a gifted athlete.”
Maybe he worked harder or smarter to get ahead. Perhaps those looks are the culmination of a lot of time invested in looking after oneself. Maybe you let your genetics express themselves poorly. Perhaps she took her God-given athleticism and amplified them with hard work.
See the pattern? Pushing away accountability only positions you to stay mired in your own self-limiting thoughts. Oh, here we go again Dr. Dan. Yup, you have to take ownership of your thoughts, words, and deeds.
In my faith, this is how I look at the Trinity – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Father is the THOUGHT, which is the original expression. Jesus is the WORD, a projected expression of thought. The Holy Spirit is the DEED, the embodiment of the Trinity and the most palpable form of expression.
Your Soul, Mind, and Body work similarly. Basically, your body is the emBODYment of your thoughts, words, and habits. If you forfeit responsibility, you’ll never reach your fullest potential. I know life isn’t always easy, and victimhood can feel like a simple way out. It takes no energy to point a finger and pass the blame.
The above quote provides an architectural framework for improving habits. At first, it may be hard to change what is automatic to you. You have to change your internal dialogue. The middle can get messy and challenging while you work to align your words and actions with your new thought processes. But the end result is a beautiful set of habits that will elevate your life!
Remember you are a process, not a thing, which means you can always improve.
