Dear Friends,
Name something you can’t grab, yet it shapes the earth like a bulldozer. You can get it knocked out of you, but not for good or you’ll die. The answer: Air!
While I was sitting in Iceland at the bottom of the Bjarnarfoss waterfall, I watched as wind whipped at the water, the water shaped the canyon, and the seagulls swooped around in the air. It was quite amazing!
I have a water filter for camping by a company called First Need. A great name, as it correctly implies you need water before food. Water, however, is your SECOND need as without air, or breath, it is all over pretty quickly. What I find intriguing is that the air we breathe has to be food for the soul. It has to be connected to our fundamental essence as a human being. Because as long as you continue to breathe, your soul stays in your body. When you stop breathing for good, that essence will leave your body. Unless you are Lazarus – it is one and done. No Mulligans!
Did you know that your spine is intricately connected to breathing? Your ribs, which are a protective armor for the lungs, attach to all 12 thoracic vertebrae in the spine. Your diaphragm – the muscle that allows lungs to draw in air – attaches to both ribs and spine. There are even neck and low back muscles that connect to the ribs and aid in deep breathing. When someone has a breathing ailment such as asthma, allergies, COPD, even congestion from a head cold, problems with the back and neck commonly follow. We treat the skeletal issues that stem from these ailments daily.
Even those of us with a good set of lungs tend to underperform. How so? We tend to breathe shallowly.
