Dear Friends,
A few years ago, my mom had cataract surgery on one eye. I called her afterward to see how she was doing, and she said, “Well, I’m not in a hurry to get the other one done.” When I asked why not, she responded with a question: “When the f%$# did I get all these wrinkles!?”
That’s the catch with fixing health issues — sometimes, ironing out one wrinkle reveals new ones. I told my mom to hang her head out the car window while she drives to help remove her wrinkles. It worked for our mastiff, Ellie. 😉
This phenomenon is more common than you might think. A couple of years ago, I referred a patient for knee surgery. I ran into him at a wedding after his operation and asked how he was feeling. He said, “Horrible! My knee is fine, but it made my hip go bad now.”
Nope — that’s not how it works. We feel the greatest pain in our bodies most prominently. Once that pain is relieved, the next greatest pain finally gets its time to shine. His hip was already bad before the surgery, but because his knee pain was worse, that’s what he noticed first.
These are great examples of how things can change before our eyes. My mother’s wrinkles didn’t suddenly appear — they were simply hidden behind the haze of her cataracts. To prevent these kinds of surprises — like my patient’s hip pain — it’s important to stay on top of your health.
This advice is especially valuable for those in their 30s and 40s, but it’s never too late to gain a more comprehensive understanding of what’s going on in your body!
