Dear Friends,
It’s funny who we choose to trust sometimes. Patients will come in saying they tried this or that based on some pretty shoddy recommendations! When did we start to believe a random post with no expertise on Facebook or TikTok over a trained healthcare provider?
I have gone hang gliding, skydiving, zip lining, and flying with people I met 5 minutes prior. Think about that. Me: Hello, I am Dan. Them: Hi Dan, fasten yourself to me and let’s jump out of a plane! Me: OK, sounds GREAT! (To my credit, I only jump out of planes with trained professionals, not Joe Schmo on the street corner.)
Yeah, we don’t always think things through before we do them. At times, that is ok — if we always played it safe, we wouldn’t make progress. Living in pure comfort is not good for your longevity.
That is one of the reasons why hot and cold exposure are so good for your health. It helps create adaptive flexibility. That means the ability to thrive, even when you aren’t fully in control. This is important, as we have way less control over our lives than we like to imagine.
As we create more comforts in life (innovation, progress), we have to counter that with some discomfort so we don’t get weak and soft. Can you imagine if a Native American from the 1600’s walked into a Planet Fitness and witnessed a man lifting a weight, just to put it down right where he picked it up? Or saw a woman running on a treadmill, literally going nowhere?! They would think you were nuts. Life WAS training.
Now we make life easier and easier. Yes, I am old enough to remember getting up off the couch to change the TV by hand to one of the 3 stations we received. Now we not only have remotes, we have streaming services that make the decision to start the next episode for you! This is a truth we have to face. As we make life easier, we also need to find ways to make it harder in order to stay healthy. That could mean a workout at the gym, but it can also mean small daily choices that add up over time.
We are made to move. So next time you’re standing in front of an elevator, can you take the steps instead? At the airport, could you take a walk (or run if you’re late) rather than standing on the conveyor belt? Yep, find moments to turn it and burn it. Step trackers are great devices for helping you keep that in the forefront of your mind.
So count down from 5 and jump in! Start small and keep moving forward. Find little ways to work harder, and your life will get easier!
If you’re going to binge any TV show, make it Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones on Netflix
