Dear Friends,
When Dr. Jean and I moved to Plymouth and bought the late Dr. Patenaude’s practice we made a few immediate changes, one being to stop gowning every patient. Yes, all patients up to that point had to disrobe and put an exam gown on. The thought process of those old-timers was that you had to touch the back directly to provide the best care.
Well, we can treat your concerns easily enough without that hassle. One day in the early 90’s, Karen and I were in with a new patient who was glad to hear she didn’t have to don a gown. I wanted to feel her back spasms directly, so as she laid face down I began untucking her white T-shirt in order to get to her skin. I felt like a magician pulling a cloth out of their sleeve – her shirt just kept comin’ and comin’! Then, I saw her butt cheeks flinch 😳. I made eye contact with Karen, who was beet red from quietly laughing. She set down her clip board and had to walk out of the room. Yup, Karen just saw me give this poor woman an atomic wedgie. I wasn’t sure what to do, so I acted like nothing happened and told her that Karen would be back shortly to take an x-ray. UGH I was mortified! As luck would have it, she did return for a second visit. I never did see her wear another white T-shirt.
I lucked out: I acted like nothing happened and everything worked out for both of us. In healthcare, ignoring signs…well it can be deadly. We hear all the time from patients who were told: “It wasn’t bad enough to treat yet.” So you’re telling me, you are driving the wrong direction, headed towards a cliff and you know it, but you’re going to keep driving that way until you reach the cliff’s edge? That seems nothing short of stupid. And dangerous.
Early intervention for any health concern limits not only your pain, but also the amount of time and money required to right your issue. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. When I treat a whiplash injury in the first week to month after the accident, that patient improves way quicker than someone who waited a year before coming in. The same goes for back pain, reflux, heart issues…most all health concerns. Intervening early means intervening less!
So pull your head out of the sand and pay attention to your health, or you may find yourself wedged into a corner.
Ouch,
Dr. Dan
